Looking at taking up a career in IT or Tech? You may even be looking to advance your own skillset to work your way up the ladder!

Whether you’re working a dead-end job or are transitioning out of another sector, everybody has different reasons to make the jump into the IT or Tech industry. And the timing couldn’t be better! The industries are constantly on the lookout for new talent; plus, they can offer great pay, amazing benefits, and lots of exciting employment opportunities.

If you don’t have much experience but are looking to join this thriving industry, don’t worry — you’re not the first. There are many other routes as well as university, which means it has never been more accessible to enter a new industry, along with some determination and hard graft – of course.

In this week’s blog, Nathan, our founder and director, talks about his own entry route into the tech world, before delving into building his own recruitment consultancy… did you know that EDIT was actually born from personal recruitment headaches and challenges that he faced? This is why our ‘Candidate Led‘ approach is so important to both Nathan, and the team.

“When I started within the IT sector I went through an apprenticeship and started my career with a local authority. I stayed there for 2 years where I then moved to Leeds to continue my development in 2 IT roles that lasted 4 years, before I came back home to learn web development.

The IT Sector gave me the hands-on experience, and technical thinking to be able to solve problems and develop solutions and I really enjoyed writing SQL and various automation tasks and scripts, that is where I found my passion for web development!

When learning web development, I became very passionate about the front-end side of things, making things look and feel good for the end-users and ensuring that the UI/UX were compliant with various algorithms across the internet. The ever-changing processes of front-end technologies drove me to continue my learning!”

When starting my career as a developer I worked in various digital agencies to gain the ultimate experience, there’s no experience quite like a digital agency – it’s very fast-paced and working on many projects at once that required different skillsets constantly; It’s a skill in itself to manage that.

I used various learning providers such as Treehouse, where I gained tech degrees and developed my skills in web development over a period of 12 months.

I then went away and became a Technical Director, which was more of a DevOps focussed role. This is where I learnt further on the job and developed various automated processes for the developers to have a seamless experience in their jobs when submitted code and using production and live environments.”

Nathan’s own history is proof that through hard work and determination, a career within the industry is completely doable! Furthermore, if you’re interested in other activities you can do to help build your skill set, here are some more ideas to help you get into IT, Web Development or Cyber Security:
